The Three-Cornered Hat, July 2-4, 8-11: Mascall Dance (Dancing on the Edge)

I cannot believe the list of luminaries in this production, as I see them listed in the show poster. I’m looking forward to this performance. Note that July 2 is by donation. This is the sort of multimedia/multidisciplinary show that I love to see, as those tend to exhibit so much creativity.

A quintet of dancers at the top of their game – Lara Barclay, Amber Funk Barton, Billy Marchenski, Darcy McMurray and Chris Wright – premiere The Three Cornered Hat, an essay on movement and space. At the centre of the work is a pile of empty red hardcover artist notebooks: traps for poetry, whose empty pages lead into worlds offering us possibility and mystery. Jennifer Mascall’s latest work examines the life of the space between two movements, two bodies, a book’s pages, performer and audience. These inhabit both the topography of the performance site, Chapel Arts Centre, and the landscape of our imagination. Formed through Mascall’s Public Research*, the dance is steeped in the collaborative audacity of MascallDance Creatives – architect/designer Bill Pechet, composer Stefan Smulovitz (live on viola and laptop) videographer Candelario Andrade, writer/ slam poet Barbara Adler, lighting by John Macfarlane. *more about public research at www.mascalldance.ca
